Random Name Picker — How It Works

The Random Picker lets you add any list of names, options, or items and instantly select one or more at random with a fair, unbiased algorithm. It is used by teachers to call on students, event organizers to pick giveaway winners, managers to assign tasks randomly, and groups of friends to decide who pays the bill.

Two Ways to Add Your List

Add one by one: Type each name individually with the + button. You can reorder entries using the arrow buttons and remove any entry with ×. Press Enter after each name to quickly add the next.

Paste a list: Copy a list from Excel, Google Sheets, WhatsApp, or any text source and paste it directly — one name per line. The tool counts and parses entries automatically.

Popular Use Cases

Teachers use it to randomly call on students without repeats — the tool grays out used names automatically. Event managers use it to pick competition winners from an entry list fairly. Friend groups use it to decide who picks the movie, who cooks dinner, or who makes the first move in a board game. HR teams use it to randomly assign mentors or project leads. YouTubers and streamers use it live for giveaway winner picks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many names can I add?
You can add up to 50 names in individual mode, or paste an unlimited list in paste mode. For very large lists (100+ names), paste mode is recommended.
Can I pick more than one winner?
Yes. Set the "Pick" number to however many winners you need. The tool will animate through the selection and reveal all winners at once.
What happens to already-picked names?
By default, once a name is picked it is marked as used and excluded from future picks. You can re-enable duplicates by checking the "Allow same item" toggle, or hit Reset to restore all entries.
Is the selection truly random?
Yes. Every entry has an equal chance of being picked by algorithm — the selection is completely fair and unpredictable, just like drawing names out of a hat.
Can I use it for a classroom lottery?
Absolutely. Load the class preset or paste your student list, set pick count to 1, and call on one student at a time. Used students are automatically removed until everyone has been called.
