About this tool

Page numbers are a small but meaningful signal of document professionalism. A thesis submitted without them, a legal brief missing folio references, a technical manual where readers cannot find the section cited on page 47 โ€” these are friction points that undermine otherwise good work. ToolkitFlow's Add Page Numbers tool stamps configurable page numbers directly onto any PDF, using nine placement positions, eight number formats, and full control over font and margin. Everything runs in your browser with no software to install.

The skip-first-N-pages option is designed for the way real documents are structured. Thesis guidelines often require Roman-numeral front matter (preface, table of contents, abstract) that is numbered separately from the Arabic-numeral body. Legal documents frequently start numbering from page 3 or 5 to skip cover sheets and certification pages. Setting Skip to 2 means numbers appear from page 3 onward, starting at 1 โ€” exactly the behavior you'd get from a professional typesetting tool.

Common Use Cases

  • โ€บAdding mandatory page numbers to an academic thesis or dissertation before submission
  • โ€บNumbering a legal brief's body pages while skipping the cover and table of contents
  • โ€บAdding folios to a technical manual so support staff can reference 'see page 12'
  • โ€บStamping page numbers onto a compiled report assembled from multiple sources
  • โ€บNumbering handout PDFs prepared from a presentation for conference distribution

Privacy & Security

All PDF processing runs directly in your browser using WebAssembly and pdf-lib. Your files are never uploaded to any server โ€” everything is processed locally on your device, so your documents remain completely private even without an internet connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start the numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. The starting number is configurable โ€” useful when a document is one part of a larger series that needs continuous folio numbering across multiple files.

How does 'Skip first N pages' work exactly?

If you set Skip to 2, the first two pages receive no number stamp and are excluded from the count. Numbering begins on page 3 of the document, displayed as '1' (or 'Page 1', 'i', etc. depending on your format). This is the standard approach for cover pages and front matter.

What number formats are available?

Eight formats: Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), Page N (Page 1, Page 2), N of Total (1 of 10), Page N of Total, lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), uppercase Roman numerals (I, II, III), uppercase letters (A, B, C), and lowercase letters (a, b, c).

Can I choose where on the page the numbers appear?

Yes โ€” nine positions are available in a 3ร—3 grid: top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, center, middle-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, and bottom-right.

Will the numbers cover existing content?

Page numbers are placed within the margin area. The margin distance from the edge is configurable, so you can keep numbers in the white space at the bottom or top of each page without overlapping existing text.
